DIY: Makeup or Vanity Table Under $100

Makeup or Vanity Table on a budget!

It took me over a year to finally come up with a decent makeup area. For the past year, I settled for a square table that was more of utility rather than aesthetics. You can have a close up look of it here.

I have been decorating and re-decorating our humble home the past two weeks (thanks to Pinterest) and the only thing left that really bothered me was my makeup table.

So, I went ahead and looked for inspiration online and the biggest problem was that vanity tables generally cost at least $100. I was not in the position to cough up too much money on this project and if you are like me who is on a budget, then keep on reading!

How to do it:

First, secure a table with a drawer. I searched all over my town, both thrift/vintage stores and shopping centers for the best deal and the one I went for was the Writing Desk from Walmart that’s sold for $39.84. This is the cheapest I could find! This is the most expensive item that you will spend on.

It only has one drawer that is enough for your every day makeup (in my case anyway) The height is perfect for doing makeup. I’m 5’4″ and I don’t like stooping down or bending forward too much when doing my makeup.

Second, Figure out how you want to hold your brushes. This was quite challenging for me because I was very indecisive. I already had a container for my brushes that I made myself using the technique I showed in my DIY: Eco-friendly Makeup Organizer. But I needed it to look modern and minimal. So, I went ahead and used the 3 Dollar store candle holders I purchased a while back. I also got 3 packs of glass marbles from the Dollar Store.

The number of candle holders depends on how you want to divide your brushes. I separated my face brushes from my eye brushes and those that I use for my eye brows and liner.

CALCULATION:

$39.84 – $40.00 – table with drawer

$3.00 – candle holders

$3.00 – glass marbles

$46.00

Third, For my q-tips, eyelash curler, tweezers, and lash glue, I just recycled 2 glass candle holders from Glade so it doesn’t really count for our calculation, but you can always buy 1 or 2 more candle holders (in different size or shape if you want) at the Dollar store.

Fourth, For the tray that holds my eye shadow palettes, I just re-used a tray I got from the Dollar store. The color is perfect for my room because red is the accent. If you prefer not to use a tray, you can use a document organizer/tray. There are numerous types out there that you can pick from based on your preferences.

CALCULATION:

$39.84 – $40.00 – table with drawer

$3.00 – candle holders

$3.00 – glass marbles

$1.00 – tray

$47.00

Fifth, mirrors; I bought a big one from the Dollar store, but there’s also one sold at Walmart for $5.00. The round mirror is an old one. I wanted to get a lighted mirror, but realized that I can just use my lamp to light my face when I need to since it’s already right beside my table. But a great lighted mirror is the Conair Oval Illuminated mirror.

CALCULATION:

$39.84 – $40.00 – table with drawer

$3.00 – candle holders

$3.00 – glass marbles

$1.00 – tray

$1.00 – big mirror

$48.00

Sixth, this is optional, but I highly recommend getting a no-slip mat for your table. This prevents things from sliding as well as adds texture to the entire thing. I got mine from the Dollar store, but Walmart sells them for $4.97, if you don’t have a Dollar store near you.

CALCULATION:

$39.84 – $40.00 – table with drawer

$3.00 – candle holders

$3.00 – glass marbles

$1.00 – tray

$1.00 – big mirror

$1.00 – no-slip mat

$49.00

Seventh, get divider trays for the drawer to contain your every day makeup. For the specific table we are using, get the $4.97 set of trays from Walmart. It comes with 8 pieces. I used two big ones horizontally, 2 lengthwise ones vertically, and used the remaining space for random stuff.

For the rest of your makeup, you can always get plastic drawers and store them near your table. I preferred hiding them in my walk in closet because i didn’t like the way they looked. I couldn’t find a cheap drawer that matched the look of my makeup area, and honestly, I am going for a modern, minimal look so less is more.

CALCULATION:

$39.84 – $40.00 – table with drawer

$3.00 – candle holders

$3.00 – glass marbles

$1.00 – tray

$1.00 – big mirror

$1.00 – no-slip mat

$4.97 – $5.00 – divider trays

$54.00

For the lipsticks, I already had my lipstick holder on hand, so I didn’t have to purchase any. You can use a tray, candle holder, or you can make your own! Here’s a nice acrylic lipstick holder for 24 pcs as well.

DIY makeup table

That is it for my makeup area! I like that it looks clean and organized! I can honestly say that I will be doing my makeup more comfortably and it will be more pleasant. Notice how the table sits perfectly under my window? It’s great for natural lighting during day-time.

I hope that this was helpful. I went through quite a lot of indecisiveness, frustration, and a lot of trips to random stores just to come up with this and I really felt the need to share it with the rest of you so you can skip all the hassle.

Hey Maricarl I just want to say I love your make up vanity and I am considering purchasing the same table at walmart and I think it will be a good height as I am also 5’4. I still want to know what kind of chair would be best like if you have a recommendation on a chair or which one you use? This is definitely perfect for someone on a budget and great idea!!

      Hello Nieves,

I use the foldable chair that comes with the standard black table set from Walmart. You can also use a standard size office chair if you prefer something with wheels so you can easily move. This set up is very convenient and space-saving.
